7 Reasons Why We Should Not Care About What Others Think About Us

Hello, my lovelies!!! It is currently about 2am on a Thursday AEST and not too long ago I was talking to someone and a question similar to ‘why do you care so much about what others think’ came about. This made me think about, well, why I care so much about what others think and why I should not care about what others think. As I thought about it I kind of felt numb thinking about why I care so much; I have no answer, for ages I have just cared and that is the end of it. Therefore I thought deeply about why we should not care about what others think. Today’s post is for those who care about the opinions of those who don’t care about them. Today’s post is for those who care for the validation of those who don’t validate them. Today’s post is for those who care for the acceptance of those who don’t accept them. Below I have 7 reasons why I think that we need to stop caring about what others think about us. I hope you enjoy this post.

1 – It is literally none of their business.

I have recently realised that no matter what you do, people will have their opinion. Whether it is about you, about what you are doing or about how you are doing what you are doing. People are entitled to think whatever they want, just as you are entitled to think whatever you want. What people think of you does not change who you are or what you are worth, unless you allow them to. At the end of the day, you are the only person who needs to approve of your own choices.

2 – They don’t know the whole story, they just know the one paragraph at best.

Nobody knows a story better than the author. There will be critiques and there will be fans but no one will ever be as invested in your life as you. I personally believe that only you know what is best for you. So no matter what others say, you do you.

3 – What works for someone else may not work for you

What is best for somebody else, can be the worst thing for you. What one person considers garbage can be another person’s treasure. We are all so unique. Only you know what is right for you.

4 – You may stop yourself from moving up

I cannot express how much caring what others thought about me affected my dreams, aspirations, and plans. If you are one to be constantly worried about what other people think, you will never get to where you need to go in life. You are going to have to do things that don’t always meet people’s standards.

5 – You will get most affected

You will be the most affected. You are the one stuck with the consequences of your decisions. When people give you their suggestions or even orders, there is no risk for them. They don’t have to live with your choices—but you do.

6 – They don’t care as much as you think

No matter what you may think people most likely don’t really care as much as you think. Honestly, I think that people think about “me, myself and I”. Unless who you are or what you have done directly affects another person or their life, they are unlikely to spend much time thinking about you at all.

7 – It is impossible to please everybody

No matter what you do, at the end of the day, you cannot please everybody in your life. It is impossible to live up to everyone’s expectations so there is no point in burning yourself out trying to do so. Just make sure that one of the people you please is yourself! Caring about what others think is an unnecessary weight on your shoulders and a burden to your life. Carrying this weight and burden with you constantly can and most likely will restrict you to live to your fullest capabilities. When you become so obsessed with other people’s opinion of you, you forget your own. You can make a conscious effort to stop caring so much; to let yourself free. Once you give up catering to other people’s opinions and thoughts, you will find out who you truly are, and that freedom will be like taking a breath for the first time. I still have a long way to go. I am still finding myself caring about what others think but at the end of the day, I am constantly reminding myself that the certain person who I was troubled by doesn’t mean much. As tomorrow, next week, next month, next semester or even next year, they won’t be important in my life. I have lately noticed that I care what people think because I kind of have social anxiety which I am constantly trying to hide.

“Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.”
