Hellooooo!!! Just over the weekend, I was with my wonderful cousins and we were talking about volunteering and donating; basically the act of service. It got me reflecting on how I can better volunteer (and donate) and that lead to me thinking about why we should volunteer (or donate).
And that is what today’s post is about, reasons why we should volunteer (or donate). This post is aimed at no one but my future self; as are almost all my posts.
I always get asked why I am always trying to help people and why I continue to do so when I don’t anything in return. In Hinduism and Sikhism, there is a notion of selfless service. This means to provide a service without the expectation of anything in return. As I practice both religions to my best capability, I find that this is the motivation behind my attempts and acts of volunteering.
Now let’s get onto the post. Long story short, think about the positive impact:
- The positive impact it can have on those who receive your act/s of service. Whether it is donating money to an organisation, providing food and necessities to the homeless, or simply helping a friend in need, I personally can notice the relief, happiness, and contentment of the receiver. A little help can go a long way. This alone, makes me relieved, happy and content.
- The positive impact it can have on society. Thinking about it, if everyone who can volunteer does some form of service to those in need, others could struggle less. Another thing to note is that the notion of selfless service is also a way to initiate some self-reflection. It could be a turning point of your gratitude journey. If we took a step back and release what we have then the world may just be a better place.
- The positive impact it can have on yourself. I personally feel a lot better about myself when I help those in need. Now this technically doesn’t counts as selfless service. However, knowing that I am doing some form of good, providing someone a momentary reason to smile and helping someone somehow makes me feel good about myself. The fact that I am privileged enough to be able to volunteer and donate says it all for me.
I don’t really know if this post will help anyone or my future self. I just did a brain dump in a form of a blog post. I hope you enjoyed this post 🙂
